What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system (joints, bones and muscles), in addition to their effect on the nervous system and general health.

All the joints of the body can be evaluated, but Chiropractors have a special interest in the spine. A patient’s entire physical, emotional and social wellbeing will also be taken into consideration when they are assessed.

The profession is regulated by the General Chiropractic Council, an independent statutory body established to regulate all Chiropractors in the UK. They ensure the safety of patients undergoing Chiropractic treatment and maintain high standards of practice within the profession.

How does it work?

Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility and flexibility, with an emphasis on hands-on manipulation of the spine and other joints. Gentle manipulations (sometimes called adjustments) are frequently performed where appropriate. Other techniques such as soft tissue work, dry needling (acupuncture), Activator, taping, exercises and advice may also be used.

Response to treatment can take time and will vary depending on the type of injury/complaint and how long symptoms have been present, in addition to work demands, general health and lifestyle factors.
